How this works

  • Every night at 05:00 UTC we poll Open Charge Map around each of the 34 tracked towns and cities (8-mile radius) and record what we find.
  • We track how many chargers exist in each power band: Fast (22kW+), Rapid (50kW+) and Ultra (150kW+), plus the connector mix across CCS, Type 2, CHAdeMO and Tesla.
  • Where operators publish a tariff we also record the median price per kWh. Coverage depends on operator data, so pricing charts show sample counts alongside the trend.
  • Free chargers are counted separately from priced ones and never mixed into the price median.
  • Each charger is attributed to its nearest tracked town centre, so regional rollups never double-count a site. Town history compacts to weekly resolution after two years; regional series are kept forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each night we read the tariffs Open Charge Map publishes for every hub we track and convert them to pence per kWh. We take the median across hubs that list a price; free chargers are counted separately and excluded from the median. Operators that publish no tariff simply don't contribute to that day's figure.

Open Charge Map, the UK's community-maintained public charging database. Counts reflect what is registered there, which tracks the official rollout closely but can lag new sites by a few weeks.

Public pricing data is still patchy: many hubs list no tariff at all. Infrastructure growth is complete for every town from day one, which makes it the more reliable trend while tariff coverage improves.

We use the charger's maximum power output: 22-49kW is fast, 50-149kW is rapid, and 150kW or above is ultra-rapid. Where a hub offers multiple connectors we use its highest rating.
